About the Web Page
The intention of this page is to provide useful information to mountain bikers
planning a ride in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Obviously, everything here is based on our subjective experience.
"Gatetrails" is a reference to loops in southwestern Marin County, specifically those we
can manageably ride in a day from San Francisco, starting and finishing by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.
These are the local rides, loops, and trails most familiar to us, mainly including
the Marin Headlands, Tiburon Peninsula, and Mount Tamalpais, but sometimes
goes up to Pine Mountain, and can conceivably reach up to Point Reyes although
we've always driven there.
Outside of this area, specifically northern Marin County, Sonoma and Napa, the East Bay, South Bay, and the San Francisco Peninsula,
whole parks and preserves will be discussed around the route that we took, or,
in retrospect, the route we wish we would have taken.
These loops generally come from mountain bike books, rumors from friends,
recommendations we can find on the internet, or checking out an online map and making a judgement call.
Please let us know
of major omissions, necessary
corrections, or anything else that might improve this page.
About Bill...
"Ride, ride, ride. I love to ride... to race the cars and peddle so hard
the air cools my face and roars in my ear... to feel the gentle fog meet the
steamy sweat and condense into salty bliss which soaks my clothes and clogs my
pores. My heart cranks and spins! My soul is made of dirt and asphalt! Go,
little finch, and warn the wind a rider comes!!"
Bill works at drug treatment programs and a homeless clinics around
the Mission district and elsewhere in San Francisco, and lives in the Richmond District. In his free time he likes
riding mountain bikes and tidepools.
About Kenny...
"You have no idea what I put up with... you know this guy talks like that
in real life? The only reason I have anything to do with this crazy fool is that he offers
to drive to the places where we go biking, and while we ride around he pretty
much keeps his mouth shut except when he mumbles to himself. So that's worth it... isn't it? Isn't it?!?"
Kenny just moved from the Sunset District to the East Bay,
and likes to party in his free time. He also likes movies, hiking, and riding mountain bikes.

The Camera...
This camera first used for most images on this website is a Minolta D'Image V, which I got for Christmas 1998, so
it is practically an antique as digital cameras go. From the
reviews
on PhotographyREVIEW.com, it scored pretty average, but in the written comments people generally seemed to like
it which has been my experience.
You can't buy it anymore, and much better models can be had for a lot less money. This one just kept on ticking, was easy
point and shoot, fit perfectly in the back pocket of a bike jersey, and withstood many hard landings.
And if anything ever happened to it, well, it was time for a new one anyway.
Well rest in peace old Minolta. As a consequence of my Ring Mountain crash
(which also ripped my front brake, bent my
saddle, pulled some back ligaments, cracked my helmet and a couple ribs, and left my right side covered with abrasions)
I soon discovered the glass plate covering the lens was scratched which left fuzzy spots
on images shot within 60 degrees of the sun.
After a long search the one I found as a worthy replacement is the
Canon Powershot S40, which I bought in late August, 2002.
It has a nice solid feel, and picture quality is probably the best in it's class,
but I'm a little worried the plastic faceplate won't be able to handle much of an impact.
I keep it attached to my handlebars, and since going to full suspension with disc brakes I hardly fall much anymore.
Oh, if you're thinking of
buying one, don't judge the camera by the images on this page... the original 4 megapixel images are much cleaner
and sharper than the heavily jpeg'd 640x480 pictures available here.
Maybe look at the shots on the wallpaper page to see what it can do, that will give you a fair idea,
but the originals are still more than twice the size of the biggest wallpapers available. Anyway, having
used it for over a year, I highly recommend it.
Well, times change, and digital cameras left unattended wander off, perhaps to bigger and better things.
After losing the S40 at Rockville, I really just wanted another S40, but Canon no longer makes them.
So, I chose the Canon Powershot S410
instead, which has basically the same lens and receptor element, a more compact case,
and more advanced digital processing algorhythms. It even does a much better job in darker settings,
and the smaller size (and weight) and I'm sure greater durability is perfect
for mountain biking, though it lacks the S40's aperture control, though I have not found myself missing it yet.
For nature photography a lot of the standard settings on this model oversaturate the colors,
they just look wrong, so I set to neutral colors, ISO 50, and sunny white balance (or cloudy if it is that kind of day),
which keeps the noise and the purple fringing low, and the pictures have the same general look as they did
with the S40.
Notes on trail discussions:
"Description: Mountain biking from the beginning has inspired the poet in me,
so this web page is mostly my way of exercising various creative energies. These are just random vignettes,
usually a little story built around what part of the ride most stuck to my mind, or anything else
lately floating around in my head.
Take them or leave them. Yes, I'm quoting myself. Sometimes, a teacher once told me, you just have to
quote yourself. These quotations originally came from emails, back in the early days of the web page,
until my friends got tired of
my longwinded rambling so I uploaded them instead to let people read them at their leisure.
The purpose of
it all, as much as anything, is to serve as my mountain biking diary." (b. June 5, 2004)
Directions: While I've tried to be careful enough with the directions that
they can stand on their own, I think it is better if you can correlate our directions
with those on a map. I post maps when they are available online,
otherwise
Mapquest™ or
Yahoo are good internet mapping
programs for road directions. Keep in mind we use San Francisco
as a starting point, and sometimes I get my right and left confused (which can be a real hassle when passing hikers).
I start with a general statement about the ride, then give road directions, then a recommended or common
loop within the park that you can ride.
All directions given are for trails where you can legally ride.
Profile:
The profile section attempts to give you enough information to come to some idea whether a trail will be fun for you.
After net elevation and average grade on the climbing parts,
we'll try to warn you of those occasional power climbs which screw up aerobic balance,
or prevailing winds, or anything else that might be relevant.
Aerobic capacity and conditioning, leg and body strength, glycogen and creatinine stores,
weight, experience, attitude, quality of the bike, proper diet and hydration, pain tolerance
and style of riding determines how actually hard a ride is, and for each person these will be different.
So I have tried to avoid such terms as beginner, intermediate, or advanced in the description;
but for technical singletrack, I've found it impossible not to use some qualitative terms, so if it's hard
I'll mention what we found hardest about it.
English units are used, because metric is for math weenies that can't hack multiplying or dividing
by any factor other than 10.
Comment [1-10]: In the directions and profile, we try to stick to the facts, but here we say what we thought of it,
and include a rating on a 10-point scale to offer some vague quantitative assessment of how one ride compares to another.
It's a very subjective reflection of the amount of fun we had, and many variables go into
it (i.e. too steep, not steep enough, lots of pavement, hard to find parking, etc.).
The natural beauty of the ride and sense of escape probably weighs in the heaviest.
Ratings also reflect our moods during the ride, and when it gets written up, so allow an error margin of one or two points.
Now that a number of trails have been reviewed, probably the most common score is 7˝, which indicates
a nice, fun, typical ride that offered some decent scenery, good
exercise, and a few thrills on the way down.
Anything 6 or higher is a good local ride.
Ratings above 8 are reserved for those trails we would recommend to somebody coming from out of the area.
I think over the years I've deleted all trails that rate below a four.
These ratings are geared toward cross country rides, not freeride or downhill.

Epilogue
John M. Writes: "I just realized today that you haven't updated it for quite a while, and couldn't help but wonder what had happened.
Do you quit riding? Run out of new trails to review? Kidnapped by Martians? Lost in a marijuana haze? Inquiring minds want to know…"
A little of all the above =p. Basically, after Kenny got his mountain bike stolen, he never bought a new one, and just does road biking now.
I still mountain bike, but things just weren't the same without Kenny.
Besides, I figure we reviewed somewhere close to 90% of the legal trails in the general purview of the site,
so leaving a few places for people to discover on their own was fine I figured.
I've been toying with the idea of giving the site a final edit, but eh, nothing wrong with leaving it a little rough around the edges.
Although I've stopped working on this web page, my plans are to leave it up indefinately.
So, in the end, this is our mountain biking story-- one small tale of many written in sweat, body odor, and adranaline.
My time and attention has been consumed by an entirely separate and
independent creative undertaking, so who knows... in another time, and another place, you might just hear my name again.
Kenny and I thank you all for the feedback we've received over the years, and also to the silent majority for patronizing this site.
I know we're an independent bunch.
May all your days be sunny and cool, and all your fire roads be downhill.
Best Regards,
Bill and Kenny
March 16, 2008
(P.S. For those of you who have looked at some of the other photo exhibits you may recall that in the '05 San Rafael steet art exhibit
I invited one of the featured artists to write me, if she wished. Well guess what... it worked! Last year I had a lovely dinner with Ms.
Stimmel, when she was in Napa for another street painting faire. I am pleased to report she is even cuter in person! Now not that I wouldn't,
well you know, without a second thought... but she is situated in LA and I'm in SF and that's just the way it sometimes goes...)

Everything written here is ours. All the images here

The Jack London picture we are using with the permission of Dr. Clarice Stasz and it links to her Jack London page.
The Samuel P. Taylor picture is also used with permission of the owner.
The guy riding his bike down the Capital building steps looks pretty old so I'm assuming it's in the public domain,
and since I pay taxes I feel entitled to use the Seal of the Governor of California
freely as well.
The usual background pattern, the one you see on this page, which has been modified to black & white,
is produced by CoffeeCup Software and distributed with their
excellent (but rather pricey-- $49) HTML editor.
I highly recommended it for beginners-- it makes designing webpages easy. But once my trial period expired I actually
prefer the spartan HTML editor 1.5, which is free, although I do wish it had spell checking capabilities.
For most image viewing and editing I use the totally free Irfanview, although to add text in the wallpaper
picture, or any image adjustments beyond cropping, gamma correction, and the impression effect, for
that I use the awesome (and again freeware) Paintbuster.
Profile information is generally gathered from TopoZone.
