Italian Street Painting '05

A nice mid-year respite.

Aside from the rainy season where we usually give biking a little rest, there is also another time when we take it easy right in the middle of summer. Except that since we've been taking it easy most of this year, this summer-solstice respite feels like more of the same thing all along, which has been going on for a long long time. We can only hope the weather treats us better as the days get shorter and cooler, and that next year will be more of the usual kind of winter here, versus the usual kind of winter in Oregon or Seattle. And then there are all those other little things which start gobbling up free time. Anyway, the San Rafael Street Art festival easily has to be the best one in the Bay Area, which we've been coming to almost annually ever since I moved up here. Here are some pictures I took from last year '04. Now, on to this year...

Walking up A Street toward the Mission. Last year we came on Saturday where people were mostly halfway through their work. This time we came on Sunday, so that we could see the more completed pieces.

Or maybe not. This is clearly the centerpiece of this year's exhibit. Late Sunday afternoon there were still a lot of people working on their pieces.

Hey, you are Melanie, right? We thought you were the hottest thing going at the Street Art Festival, you know, your artwork and all, and since Kenny and I both agreed it must be true. To look at her other projects, here is her website...

What a nice sunny summer day.

Here's a way to make street painting pay! Draw a little well then you can collect the change... good thinking!

This was a nice National Geographic magazine cover and all, but now this was starting to get creepy.

Cruising along the main drag where most of the different works seems to be.

Here is where the school kids have their thing going on.

Around here we took a little detour to another festival which shall go unnamed. The theme, Kenny tells me was supposed to be flowers, but like nearly every other festival it was just people selling stuff. Which Make the San Rafael Street Art Festival such a perfect change of pace from the usual. We were at that other festival for all of 15 minutes before coming back. Oh, now that's nice.

As the sun sets sometimes I had to stand there for awhile for the shadows to clear before getting the money shot.

A couple other candidate for next year's T-shirt. Hey, what's the deal with the T-shirt from this year?!? How boring! We didn't even buy one, and we ALWAYS get T-shirts when we come here.

Well that was quick, almost done.

Who knows this may become a yearly tradition for this web page, which if nothing else gives me wallpapers I can use for those weekends when not out riding in the dog days of winter. (b. June 12, 2005)

I love art deco. The more art deco the better. Maybe the can have an art deco street painting fair sometime. At least I think this is art deco.

There you go. If this one doesn't get on the T-shirt next year then we aren't coming anymore! This one is by artist Melanie Stimmel who in her day job works for South Park on Comedy Central.
