Hawk Camp
A foggy peek at fleet week while riding up Conzelman Road
Nothing like impending war with Iraq to raise controversies about celebrating Fleet
Week in the Bay Area. Nonetheless,
I figured I might be able to get front row views of the ships sailing into
the Bay if I rode up into the Headlands and stopped at any number of lookouts along Conzelman.
Besides, it's been a long time since I rode into the Headlands, and I don't care what people say about it--
I have a blast whenever I go.
And there's still one trail I haven't checked out yet...

The ships of fleet week are supposed to be coming in right now, and the airshow isn't for another hour. Can't see
much of anything under the Bridge, and the view looking over the Bay isn't much better. Looks like the Canon, as good a digital camera as it is, reached it's limits in
color adjusting when shooting almost directly in the line of the sun. The Minolta would have never come close with
anything like this.
Well, maybe I'll go check out Hawk Camp overlooking Gerbode Valley near the summit of Wolf Ridge, and when I get back hopefully
the fog will have burned off a little.
The trail to Hawk Camp is a detour off the Bobcat trail, and offers some of the best views of gerbode valley below.
As usual the Marin Headlands are baking hot-- here some fog would have been welcome. Composition here could have
been better. Guess I'm just having a bad picture day.
Here ends the bike legal parts of the Hawk Camp trail. I might have gone up to the trees, but there was a sizable
party of campers and I wanted to hurry back to Fleet Week to catch the air show.
Okay, so Hawk Camp is no big deal, I guess there's a reason this is the last
trail in the Headlands I rode. Besides, the sun is at my back which never makes for especially exciting photography.
Grinding quickly up the Coastal Trail on my new Turner, I passed three lovely coeds that were picnicking.
They were so impressed they all smiled and waved hello, and one offered me some of her granola bar.
Hmmmm, maybe I should have gone for it.
Anyway, this is the view from the top of the Coastal Trail where it connects with Conzelman.
Looks like the fog is getting worse. I don't think I'm going to be catching much of an air show from
the bridge, or seeing much of anything, although the Battery Kirby beach was barely visible.
Here we go: mystery Bridge leading to nowhere. Actually, this shot is taken from the northern tower, heading south on my way home.
Even though I didn't see much of Fleet Week it was a cool ride anyway.
No biggie-- Kenny and I have plans check things out at the Marina tomorrow.
